A Few Thank You cards. . .

It is one of my New Year's Resolutions to make {AND send} more thank you cards.  This Christmas I got some totally unexpected cards from a couple of my Blogger friends and, since I sort of coasted through the holiday, I decided to make them some thank you cards.
Both of the cards.  They look better in person, trust me :)
What I Used to Make my Cards:
White Card Base
Basic Grey Patterned Paper, Sultry Vogue*
Pink Cardstock {Core'dinations Pastels}
Hero Arts Stamp & Cut, Thanks, #DC152
Homemade Dots {see below}
Wink of Stella, Clear

*Basic Grey closed its scrapbooking section in 2016 so I highly doubt you'll find the paper I used to make the cards, but there are plenty of beautiful florals out there - bet you have some in your stash!

I had a blast making these cards and they were super easy!  I just trimmed the patterned paper, attached it to my white card base and then embellished.

Since there are two cards, I'm calling this one "Pop Out" and the second card "Dots."

This is the second "pop out sentiment" card I've made.  If you'd like more information on making this type of card check out this post I made in October.  It's got detailed directions and a link to Jennifer McGuire's blog post on how to make these beauties. I used clear Wink of Stella to give the "thanks" a bit of sparkle; you can't see it in the card above, so here is a close up:

On to the "Dots" card.  As I stated above, I made these dots myself.  I hope you like the card and find a chuckle in the saga explained below.

I used Perler Beads to make my dots.  I bought a huge package of them from Amazon {I ended up giving a bunch away because I had SO many} and being I had never used them before, I had fun experimenting with them.  I also learned a few things; make absolutely sure you use parchment paper on your cookie sheet, you can literally bake these things for hours {yes, I forgot about them, but you'll see why in a second} and they won't burn.  I had the oven set at 350 degrees and they baked for hours!  I had originally timed them at taking about 45 minutes to bake; well, no worries about forgetting them! Lastly, you can cut the beads in half to make smaller dots, which is what I was doing when I got a nasty gash in my finger, hence forgetting about the beads baking.  I'm healing up though and no trip to the ER was needed.  I was nervous when I cut myself
Another look
because I am due for an ER visit; I seem to average one every six months or so and it's time. All in all, I'm glad I used the dots, I'm glad I made them smaller and I'm really glad that my finger is healing just fine.  Come to find out that Perler actually sells mini beads {and there are other companies who make the same type of beads}, so all that could have been easily avoided.
 Eh, story of my life! {hehehehe}

I am very happy with how the cards came out, even the dots.  I just bought some new dies {and have even more on their way!} and I intentionally purchased some larger word dies so hopefully I'll find some time, most likely once Valentine's Day is over, and get to making some more of the "pop out" cards.  They are really fun to make.  I hope you have a wonderful day and thank you for stopping by! Fondly, Christi

Always Use Rubber ~ Destination Paris (#3)

I know this post is late - I got my dates messed up.  Ah well,  Better late than never, right? I made this card for the Always Use Rubber Challenge, #3, the theme this go round is Destinations.  You can use any type of destination, real or imaginary, as long as you use rubber/polymer stamps.  We'd love to have you join us!

I decided I'd like to go to Paris - I wanted to make this card look like an old fashioned post card.  What do you think?

What I Used to Make my Card:
(Most of these products are discontinued but readily available online)
Kraft Card Base
White Cardstock
Adirondack Ink in Latte, Currant & Caramel
Tim Holtz Stamp Set French Market, #CSS25863
Tim Holtz Washi Tape (I think it's Correspondence?)
Martha Stewart Pastel Mini Pearls
Basic Grey Bling It Rhinestones
Dresden Star in Gold

I have had these Adirondack Ink pads since I started stamping back in the '90's - they were the first ink pads I ever bought and I still love the color palette.  I know Ranger is discontinuing and revamping their inks, but you can still get these beautiful earthtone inks from most places online.  So, thinking about the vintage postcard look I wanted, of course I turned to these ink pads.

Another Look
I began by stamping the diamond pattern from the French Market set using the caramel ink and a very light touch.  I then stamped the Eiffel Tower over the background using the currant ink.  To blend the background and the image a bit better, I stippled latte ink over the entire piece.  I added the washi tape to the top and bottom of the panel and blinged it out a bit.  I cut the Dresden star in half and added that to the sides of the main image.  Lastly, I mounted the stamped panel to a Kraft card base.

I enjoyed "getting back to my roots" with the ink choices and stippling (something I haven't done in SO long).  I hope you'll break out some of your long lost rubber and join us at Always Use Rubber! ~ I hope to see your stamped cards and projects there ~ Christi

Roaming around with Anything But a Card #48

I'm thrilled to be back designing for Anything But a Card after a two month break!  This months theme at Anything But a Card is Out & About so I made a neighborhood.  I am on a bit of a time crunch this month so I am actually typing this in advance so I am going to be done a head of time!  Since I am in a rush, I didn't take as many photos as normal (plus, this project is fairly cut & dry), but please do enjoy a stroll around my neighborhood.

What I Used to Make my Neighborhood:
Tim Holtz Artful Dwellings Movers & Shakers, Sizzix #657218
Wendy Vecchi Art Comforts Stamp Set, #SCS110
BasicGrey Paper, Scarlet Letter & Perhaps
Die from LifestyleCrafts/Quickutz Wildflower Spring Gift Set
Thin Cardboard
Golden Acrylics in Cobalt Teal, Pyrrole Orange, Titan Buff, Quinacridone Violet, Hansa Yellow, Phthalo Blue, Pyrrole Red & Burnt Sienna
Scraps of Ribbon from Stash
Piece of Foam Board

I had planned on doing a triptych so I had cut out a bunch of the little houses using the cardboard and the die cut.  I painted the houses with the different
acrylics and let them dry, then I painted all the roofs with burnt sienna.  I decided then that I'd rather have a wall hanging than a triptych, so I found a piece of Foam Board.

I painted all of the houses and then I decided to use a few of the smaller houses as decorations on the larger homes.  I wanted to spruce them up a bit more, so I raided my stash and found some ribbon that I thought enhanced each house and glued it the houses.  I had cut out the "trees" using one of the dies from the Lifestyle/Quickutz Wildflower Spring Gift Set (it's retired, but you can find tons of them online), I'm not sure the actual die name, but it's in that set, and I used the Basic Grey paper. I had to leave out a few of my houses as
they wouldn't all fit on the foam board, but I've kept them and I'm sure they will debut on another piece.  The final step was stamping the sentiment using Wendy Vecchi's Art Comforts stamp set on a scrap piece of card, using a bit of brown ink to edge it and gluing that to the board.

I hope you enjoyed your stroll around my neighborhood!! Please think about subscribing to my blog and helping me meet my goal of 100 new subscribers for 2015 ~ thank you Christi!

Craft Room Challenge Blog - Wedding or Anniversary Card

I had a completely different card all set up for today, but it seems my computer has lost the files! I love it when that happens – NOT.  Anyway, I whipped up this wedding card to make up for it. Better late than never! Please pop over to the Craft-Room Challenge, get inspired and enter your own card or project! I hope you enjoy it!

What I Used to Make this Card:
Birds Cut file of Wedding Cake & Stand (cut on my Silhouette CAMEO)

Square Card Base 5 ¼ x 5 ¼ in White

3 papers in different shades of white (classic white, light Kraft & antique (or vanilla) white)

Decorative piece of Chipboard (mine is Basic Grey)

Love by Definition – SU! Background Stamp

Love Stamp (unknown manufacturer)

Distress Ink in Antique Linen & Brushed Corduroy

The stamped background
I began by stamping the “Love by Definition” stamp on the center of the card using the Distress Ink in Antique Linen.  I didn’t want the background of the card to be white along with everything else, so I thought this gave it a little oomph.

Ribbon Flowers
Then I set about cutting out the cut file from Bird.  I searched her site for the actual cut file but had no luck in finding it. But, if your heart is set on using this cut file, I am sure she'd be able to find it for you!  I divided the cake and the stand; using the plain white cardstock I cut out the stand, then I used a light Kraft color for the cake base, and finally vanilla (antique white) for the top pieces of the cake.  I assembled the cake (although I suspect I may have done it wrong) and then cut some ribbon flowers off the ribbon. I adhered the ribbon flowers with glue and set the cake aside.

I stamped the word “love” on plain white cardstock with the Brushed Corduroy Distress Ink.  I chose a piece of chipboard that would both fit the word and on the card; inked all around the edge with the Brushed Corduroy Ink, trimmed the work and attached it to the chipboard.

Finally, I glued the cake to the card base and the chipboard as well.  It really only took me about a half an hour, and it came out looking like it took much longer, I think.  It’s amazing what you can do when you are pressed for time!  Thanks for stopping by! Christi

Warm Winter Wishes with Globecraft & Piccolo!

When I got my Design Team goodies from Globecraft & Piccolo the very first thing I noticed that one of the embossing enamels, called Mardi Gras, looked like it matched one of the designer cardstocks I had recently used on some holiday cards.  Funny how that happens!  The colors of the Enamels are breathtaking!! After I thoroughly pawed through my goodies (and set aside some items that were a bit too cold to use – the 3D Enamel Gels were almost frozen solid!) I pulled out a scrap piece of the Basic Grey cardstock called Figaro.  Sure enough, even under my Ott light, the enamel looked to be a complimentary color.  And although the holidays are over, winter certainly isn’t, and that is what prompted this card.

Here is the finished card.  I love the colors!!
What I used to make the card:
First thing I did was stamp the “Warm Winter Wishes” stamp on some white cardstock using the Enamel Powder Adhesive Fluid. I was a bit skeptical about this delivery system but I found it much easier to use than an embossing ink pad & it delivers the perfect amount of embossing ink – just don’t squeeze the bottle!  I sprinkled the Mardi Gras Embossing Enamel onto the sentiment and heated until it was embossed.  The Embossing Enamel is a fairly thick powder and I wanted to ensure that it was able to catch the beautiful calligraphy that Quietfire stamps are known for.  I think it came out perfect.  Then I stamped the Small Snow Pine stamp, using the Jet Black ink, on another piece of white cardstock and added some color to the tree with Distress Markers in Frayed Burlap & Forest Moss.  I wanted to emboss on the tree only where the snow would be, so I used a small paint brush and painted the embossing ink onto the areas of the tree where I wanted the enamel to stick. Once that was done, I poured the Mardi Gras Embossing Enamel onto the tree, tapped off the excess and embossed.  I cut the tree out kind of loosely – I don’t think I would have been able to fussy cut this image – and attached it to the Basic Grey paper.  Then I adhered my sentiment and finally, all that went onto the card base.  It’s difficult to get a good picture of how the colors match due to the shininess of the Enamel, but I hope you can see how well this card coordinates.

Here is a close up of that luscious Mardi Gras Embossing Enamel
Look for more wintry posts in the coming weeks!

Peace Card

Going through my many, many decorative papers, I found this one sheet from BasicGrey called Figaro from the Capella collection.  When I searched for this paper at BasicGrey, it was listed as discontinued which is a shame as the pattern is so pretty.  I saw this paper and decided I wanted to make a holiday card with it as I am trying to stay away from the typical holiday colors.

What I used to make this card:

  • Medium Brown card base
  • Small square of gold cardstock
  • Small square of olive cardstock
  • Layer of Figaro Paper from BasicGrey
  • Embossing Ink
  • Moon Glow 2 Toned Embossing Powder in Twilight Bronze Slate (Lindy’s Gang)
  • Peace stamp from set, manufacturer unknown

First, I stamped my Peace stamp in embossing ink on the olive cardstock and embossed it with the Moon Glow powder.

Here is the Moon Glow Embossing powder in Twilight Bronze
Slate. To me, in real life, there is a touch more slate blue
                                                  than this picture shows.

Here is a view of the BasicGrey Figaro paper I used.  The paper has some beautiful tones of olive green, light aqua blue and many shades of brown.  Of course, the camera couldn't capture the true richness of the paper.

I trimmed the sentiment and layered it on a small piece of heavy weight gold cardstock.  Then I cut a piece of the Figaro paper to layer onto the medium brown base card.  I adhered the layered sentiment onto the decorative paper and then attached that to the base card.

Here is the finished card.  I had to take the picture with a bit of a tilt to it in order to get the embossed sentiment to photograph correctly.
I really like the color combination of the papers and if I had more of the Basic Grey designer paper, I’d make more of these cards.  But, who knows what my stash hides –I may find another piece or two!

Thank you for reading this short tutorial and I hope you enjoyed the card!
Blessings!

Fall Is In The Air Card

This card was a bit more work than usual but I feel the outcome was worth the it - I hope you agree! I formulated this card while looking through the many, many rub-ons I have.  I didn't use them for a long time for fear that I would do them "wrong", and I was certain they wouldn't work the way they were supposed to.  Surprise, surprise! Once I got over my fear I discovered how easy they are to use and almost impossible to mess up (mostly because you can check them before you are done to make sure they have rubbed-on correctly).  Perfect for a crafter like me.

Materials I Used  (of course feel free to use what you have in your stash):

  • 3 Decorative papers from Indian Summer Line from Basic Grey; Aspen, Maize & Plum Wine
  • 1 ¾ Square Punch
  • Homemade Background paper, using a white card stock base painted with Distress Paint (attached the squares to it), made with Distress Paint; Aged Mahogany, Crushed Olive, Scattered Straw, Gathered Twigs
  • Distress Marker Frayed Burlap
  • Distress Ink in Gathered Twigs
  • Scrap piece of off white cardstock for rub-on
  • Basic Grey Rub-on “Fall is in the Air” in wine color
  • Gold Paper for layer
  • Dark Orange card stock for layer
  • Square card in rusty brown
  • Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist Iridescent Gold

The first thing I did when I made this card was punch out 4 squares with the square punch I had – for 3 of the squares I used the Basic Grey papers and each one was the same pattern but in different colors so I punched out the same part of the pattern from each color, then I punched one square out of some scrap vanilla card stock I had.  I applied the rub-on (for some reason the package has no identifying information on it, sorry about that!) to that square and sponged some Gathered Twigs ink around the corners, then edged it in Frayed Burlap using a Distress Marker.  Then I made the background that the squares are attached to, I used a scrap piece of white card stock and colored it with various Distress Paints (see list of colors above); it was really pretty, but I wanted to use other layers as well, so you can’t see the paper very well.  I adhered the 4 squares to that piece of paper once it dried.  I just eyeballed the spacing because I can’t be bothered using a ruler; I have tried to use a ruler in the past to perfectly and evenly space things, but it made me certifiably crazy, so now I just wing it.

I cut out another layer from some gold paper I had and then another layer out of a dark orange card stock. Typically, when I am making layers I just use my Fiskars Personal cutter and find an area on the clear guide and then cut all the sides of the paper with the same point of reference.  I just purchased a set of rulers made especially for making layers but haven’t had the time to play with them yet.  I’ll keep you posted.  I glued all the layers together and then glued them onto a Mahogany-Rusty-Brown (I can’t figure out what color the card looks like most, so you got all three) square card from my stash.

Finally, I spritzed the whole thing lightly with the iridescent gold mist. The pictures of this card don’t do it justice as it is a very pretty card.  The gold layer and the Glimmer Mist are nice and subtle but I think they give the card that extra “zing”. NOTE: For some reason every picture I took made the rub-on look black, it isn't black, it is a wine color (like those leather jackets from the early 80's - LOL)
Close up of the rub-on

The finished card - shows off the subtle shine I think

Fall Leaves Wreath

Before I get into my post, I want to apologize for not being around these last few weeks.  One of my cats, Boo, had a serious health scare and I was very preoccupied with him.  Thankfully, it appears that he is going to be fine!  So, now, on with the show!

I love the dollar store (in my area it’s called Dollar Tree) and on one of my visits I found these cute wreaths and fabric-like leaves.  The leaves come in a pack of 50, so of course I had to have 2 packs.  I decided that these would make a fabulous project for my introduction to the Design Team for Anything But a Card Challenge blog. Yes, my dear readers, I landed a design gig and I am SO excited as this will be my first time on a design team! I hope I make them proud!
The leaves & wreath before. . .
OK, enough gushing, back to the project.  I took my wreath (it is small, measures approximately 8 ½” round) and pulled out my leaves & glue and went to work.  Those of you who can use a hot glue gun may want to try that instead of using regular glue like I did, I am glue gun challenged and can’t use one without causing a disaster (but that story is for another time).

The beginning of the leafing. . .
What I did was spread the glue on the edges of the leaf and then I pushed the part of the leaf I wanted to attach through the wreath with a craft stick – I only glued the bottom of the leaves until I was almost done and added some more to fill in some spots.  On the fill in leaves, I glued the bottom edges and put a few dabs on the body of the leaf (of course all the glue was on the back of the leaves).

All Leafed Up (wreath holding courtesy of Manny)
The Gluing of the letters
Then I decided that I wanted to add the word fall to the wreath.  So I turned to my trusty Silhouette Cameo and made the word fall using a thick font.  Once I got a size I liked I also made a mirror image of it so I had 2 full sets of the word “FALL”.  I cut both of them out of different papers I had from Basic Grey.  Then I took the letters, put glue on one of them, placed a piece of string (that I also got at the Dollar Store) and sandwiched the string between the 2 letters so they could move and you’d see both sides.
After I finished with the letters, I placed them under a heavy book to really squish them together.  I then edged the letters with a Distress marker in Brushed Corduroy.

Now, I realized after I cut the letters, put them together and was getting ready to hang them that I cut them out wrong.  But I was going to hang them anyway – so I did.  I hung them and. . . I hated it. I didn't like that I had messed up the letters so if they twirled they wouldn't be right and I didn't like the way they looked hanging at all. Since I didn’t want to waste the letters so I cut the strings off and edged the tops with the Distress Marker so you can’t see the white string.  Then I experimented with placing the letters directly on the wreath and I really liked the way that looked, so I guess between me not cutting the letters correctly and then hating them hanging are my happy accidents.  I think the letters look better where I ended up placing them.  I used double stick tape to hold them and it worked perfectly!
All Done!! (again Manny the Wreath holder is holding the wreath)
And a close up of my beautiful letters!

Spooky. . .

I have really wanting to play with my stamps lately – nothing fancy, just back to some basics.  When I saw the weekly challenge for Funkie Junkie Boutique an idea was immediately sparked.  I love Halloween (as you know if you have been reading this blog) and I have a bunch of rubber stamps that reflect that love.  I am also a paper hoarder; in other words, when I find a paper that I like I hate to use it but, this challenge entry was born out of love for piece of Basic Grey paper from their “Eerie” collection, the paper name is Beware, and according to the Basic Grey website, it is a current collection. How could you NOT love this paper? All flourish-y and not a speck of orange so I can use it for my creepy creations that are not centered on Halloween exclusively – like this one - and enjoy it all year round. I purposely left off anything Halloween related; sort of a self test if you will.

So I began with the cardboard back of an 8½” x 11” paper pad and covered it with my designer paper.   Then I began to stamp; I stamped on some scrap paper, I stamped on some white cardstock, some cream cardstock, a few papers I had colored with Distress Inks and even a piece of kraft colored paper that was used in packaging from something that I bought!  Some of the images I fussy cut, others I cut with punches and still others I ripped – I have always enjoyed making collages, ever since I can remember, and this was SO much fun (such a nice feeling after my Halloween Box from Hell)!
The entire collage - click to see it bigger
I am not going to go into the exact building of the piece as it is really a personal preference and you can see where I put everything, so let me tell you what materials I used:
